Podcasts
I guess I must be getting the hang of some of this stuff. I found a podcast of Nancy Pearl's book reviews and I got it successfully loaded on my bloglines account. I didn't even have to review how to do it. I mean, that is success!!!! How great it will be to have Nancy's latest reviews right there when I log on. I guess there are some things that I do like about this new technology. All I had to do was keep on looking until I found it.
YouTube
So my husband has been telling me about all the videos that he has watched on YouTube. I haven't seen many that I have found entertaining. I did however, look up a video my brother told me about. Back in the 1970's our family was involved with a local percussion/brass performing group called the Perscussionauts. The director and percussion instructor recently had a video posted on YouTube celebrating the 30 year anniversary of a trip we took to Europe. I watched and was immediately taken back in time to the good old days. It was so great to see that Howie (he is pushing 90 years old) was still out there and doing what he did best, performing! I particularly enjoyed reading all the responses from people that were in the group back then. I would use this site for this kind of viewing, but lots of the videos that I looked at were less than entertaining.
Award winning Web 2.0 sites
Seems like is has been a while since I have worked on Library 2.0. I am getting to the end, so I am working on finishing it up. I spend a bit of time bumping around really liked the Imcooked site. It was fun, and I loved to see regular people share their recipes and better yet video so you could see them make the dish. I am not sure how you could use this at the library level. I picture it as more a fun site for personal use. I enjoyed it and saw some good recipes that I would make (if I still cooked).

Web based productivity
I'm not sure if this is going to work. I used the templates available on Google Docs. Hopefully you will be able to follow this link to see the masterpiece that I created there.
http://docs.google.com/Presentation?id=d3wbfvq_4fwbskvfm
I thought that the templates were really great. It gives you the ability to do all kinds of things that I know that I would not be able to do without a template. I really can see that this is much more efficient that emailing documents back in forth for editing. It also eliminated the problem of not being able to open documents that someone else has attached from a program that you don't have. I really think that is great. I am going to spend a bit more time on this exercise. See if I wait long enough I find something that I really see useful.

Wikis
I really like wikis. As I took a look at some of the examples that were in the exercise, I realized that this was something that I could see as useful to me. The sites that provides information, such as job searches, reader's advisory, programming, selling your library were very interesting to look at and provides timely information to consider. I really think it is a good way to manage subjects that are continually changing. One item I was reading was talking about the intranet being set up as a wiki. Another had procedures manuals in a wiki format so that changes could be easily changed (but not by just anyone). I am not so sure that I think that some things are good canidates for constant change by just anyone. But on the whole I can see that this is a good thing.

Library 2.0
I am getting old and set in my ways, but even I see that libraries will have to change their ways to keep up with the changing technologies and the way that today's information is being accessed and used. No longer do we head to the library to look up information in the encyclopedia, but are more apt to get on the internet to do research. You are more apt to see a reference book being replaced with a database or online sources. It is obvious that libraries will have to move away from the traditional way of the past and change to the needs of the future users. It will take a balance however, to meet the needs of all the generations. There are still a lot of users who just want a good old book, not electronic book. It seems that it will take carefully planning to move ahead to make the library a place where everyone's needs are met.

It has been awhile
It seems like forever since I have had time to look at Library 2.0. I must admit
I have considered just letting the rest go, as this just seems so "not me". I have decided to
keep on keeping on, and try to make it through. I must admit that Technorati is just something that I can't get. I suppose if I was really into blogging and following blogs I could see the point.
Again, there seems to be a gap between what I use and what is up and coming. Oh I hate to admit that I am getting to the point in my life that I just can't get on board with the "now" thing.

Delicious was fun to look at. I spent some time looking at some of the sites that are on the SCLD practice account. Actually I followed one to a website that had a 8 minute podcast on the subject. It was interesting to hear a more extensive description of how to use this site. Again, it doesn't seem to be anything that I would use, but I could see that it worked well for the person who did the podcast.
Well I am going to Rollyo right to the next task. I have tried to get going on this and
I even think I have something on there, but I can't seem to get it right. I guess part of the
problem is that I don't see this as anything particularly helpful to me. I don't access much in
the way of websites so what's the point ( at least for me). I do see how it could be helpful to
those that go to a bunch of different sites on a regular basis. So I am moving on to bigger and
better things.

I just spent some more time looking around library thing. I really like the section where librarian post questions etc. I can now see that this tool would be useful to gather information and suggestions from others in the field. Most of the posts that I saw asked questions and the replies were thoughtful and helpful. I guess this shows that if you keep looking you can find that some of this new technology is wonderful for networking with others.

Wow, would you look at that. I have successfully created (following an example I found) and put this image on this blog. That is amazing. I think that I will spend some more time with this since there are so many options of things you can do. Who thinks up this stuff!!! Someone with more time and imagination than I have that's for sure. Friday, February 20, 2009
Better luck next time
Well, my first attempt at adding an image to my blog was unsucessful. Stay tuned for another attempt.

I haven't gotten 10 RSS links on my blogline account yet, but I am getting there. As I am seeing things I am adding. I find that after the first couple of adds, things are starting to make sense. Pretty soon I will be an old hand at it. I am still not sure that I would use this all that much, but perhaps it will grow on me. I must admit it is nice to go to just one location, but when I get there I don't seem to look at everything there. Oh well, I guess it is like changing a habit. You have to do it enough times to make it happen without thinking alot about it. So I keep on doing it....

After much confusion I finally got some websites added to my blogline account. This is not the first time I have said to myself (and mumbled out loud) that I just don't think this is worth the aggravation. After I finally got the jist of things I am thinking, perhaps I was a bit hasty with that thought. I have added a few things mostly from the nice list that they give you to get started, and a few things that I check out daily--like pictures and news of my littlest granddaughter. If I can remember to go to the bloglines first (teaching this old dog new tricks) it will actually be kind of nice. I am going to make an effort to bump around and find things that are of interest and maybe educational to look at. Now on to the next task.

What better than to see a future librarian in training. This is my grandaughter Lorelei kicking back in her bed reading. I am sure that her mother had something to do with this as it was her favorite thing to do when she was little and probably still is.
Since I don't have a digital camera (my husband does but I have never used it) I downloaded this picture from a flickr account that Samantha has for family to keep up with Lorelei. It was really quite easy. If I had lots of pictures that I wanted to make available, I would certainly use that flickr account. It is such a great thing to pop in there and see the latest pictures from family.

As I look at the 7 1/2 habits list, I realize that have gotten lax in my attitudes for learning new things. I guess I am at a point where I am coasting a bit. My job is an familiar and routine with not much new in the challenge department. Perhaps this will be the jump-start that I need to undertake some new challenges. If nothing else, I have stopped and taken a good look at myself. Now I just need to motivate myself to new things.

So here I go.....entering the high tech world known as the 21th century. I am not ready, but will give it a go. Whatever happened to a good old paper journal to record your thoughts? Perhaps I will actually get into this, but as of now I am not so sure, but can't hurt to move ahead or at least be dragged along 1 step behind everyone else.
